Christmas 1976 … I was people watching at the mall when the thought came,
“I wonder if people are watching me, too. What do they think? Would they even like me?” I scrambled and wrote the title and words on a piece of scrap from the trash. The same words/lyrics soon became the verses of a new song of the same title, “Someone Else’s Eyes”. Somewhat haunting, yet positive and uplifting, it remains one of my favorite music ideas to this day.

If I could see the world through a different pair of eyes
I wonder if things would be the same.
Pretty things. Ugly things. People’s games.
And what would be my name?
If we could learn to love in a different place and time
Would all the friends that I know now be gone?
The love we get and what we give; grand or small
Where does love belong?
There is no need to go outside
For a better point of view
Deep in your soul is where to abide
Then surely, we could see what the world would be
Through Someone Else’s Eyes.
If I could see the world through someone else’s eyes
I wonder if I would be the same
But with what I’ve known, where I’ve been and who I’ve loved
Why would I ever want to change?
There is no need to go outside
To see the world through someone else’s eyes
